AKINA SUSHI
DELICIOUS JAPANESE FOOD AT MODERATE PRICES
IN A BEAUTIFUL SETTING (PLUS TAKE OUT OR DELIVERY)
STEPS FROM THE SUBWAY AND BUSES
LOCATED ON MANHATTAN'S EAST FOURTEENTH STREET
IN A VIBRANT AND HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOOD
Nowadays there seem to be neighborhood Japanese restaurants on every Manhattan block.  This web site was created so Joel Simon, a frequent diner and friend of Akina owner Tim Chang and his staff and family, could share with you why he thinks Akina is a very special place.  Hopefully you will give Akina a try and find it to be as great as he does.  Of course, this is his subjective opinion, and he would be interested in hearing from you by e-mail if you wish to share your own impressions with him, good or bad.  More important, if you do end up eating at Akina please tell Tim or your server if you discovered it by viewing this site, and what you like (or did not like) about it.  One of the reasons Akina is as great as it is is that Tim is responsive to constructive criticism and always seeks to improve.
The first thing you might want to know is how Joel discovered Akina in the first place, and why he thinks he is qualified to write about Japanese food at all.  Read Joel's Introduction essay, and hopefully you will agree that he has the right to an opinion on this subject.  If you are curious to know more about Joel Simon in general, check out his Main Page and follow the links there to learn about his other interests besides Akina, such as the book he is writing about Weehawken, New Jersey, and the activities of the Long Island Chrysanthemum Society, the great organization he is currently privileged to lead.
Next, Joel introduces you to owner Tim Chang, his lovely wife Nicole, and the first-class staff he has assembled to make your dining experience great.  Tim has converted this typical store-front space into a beautiful setting for your dining pleasure.
Then Joel discusses the food itself, probably the most crucial  part of this web site to you, the diner.  Of course the setting and the service are important, but it is the food itself which hopefully will bring you to Akina's door (or convince you to have the food brought to your door, if you are fortunate enough to live in Akina's neighborhood).  Since Joel has a lot to say on the subject, he has broken his essay into three parts:  The Food, a general introduction;  From the Sushi Bar, to tell you about Akina's signature cuisine;  and finally, From the Kitchen, where you can learn about the rest of the fine lunch and dinner menu.
Unless you are privileged to live in Akina's East Village neighborhood, or across the street in Stuyvesant Town, you need to know your easy transportation alternatives, especially the subway station (First Avenue on the L train) down the block.

Finally, there is much to see and do in the historical neighborhood around Akina.  Joel concludes with a brief essay about Fourteenth Street, the major Manhattan cross-street where Akina is located.
Joel has hand-drawn the map below to help guide you to Akina and its neighborhood.
